Why Not?

So today was the first class period that we had floaters. At first, everyone seemed somewhat reluctant about the idea because we had all gotten close as a group, but it turned out pretty well. In our group we talked about Descartes and his contributions, technology, and briefly got on the topic about the missing Malaysia flight. There's been a recent development with that story because debris may have been found off of the coast of Australia. I'm putting a link to the story, but I would keep a lookout for fresh information as time passes.

  1. This class has been my first real introduction to any philosophers besides Socrates, Aristotle, Plato, etc (you know, the big ones) and I am liking philosophers as a group of people more and more as time passes. I'm not much of a reader, but I might actually crack open one of these old books that we keep hearing about. I read about Berkeley and Locke today. They had some interesting views on the real world as opposed to our perception of the world.

FQ: Which Irish Philosopher was friends with Jonothan Swift, The author of Gulliver's Travels?

DQ: If Berkeley is correct in his theory that the world must be perceived in order to exist, what would happen to us when could ever be absolutely alone with ourselves? Excluding God and all else, if it were just us, would our perception of ouselves be enough for us to exist?

I was responsible for deriving questions from the readings about Voltaire. I was really excited about being able to read about him because I was already familiar with some of his philosophies and past work. His book Candide is probably one of my top five favorite books. For those of you who may not have read Candide before I highly recommend it!! Its not that difficult of a read but you have to pay attention because the events all happen really quickly in a matter of a few lines.

FQ: Who was Francois- Marie Arouet? Answer: Voltaire
FQ: Who was Candide's love? Answer: Cunegonde
FQ: True or False Was Voltaire a "law abiding" citizen? Answer: False
FQ: What real event did Voltaire include in his book Candide (Hint: It was a natural disaster in 1755 Portugal). ? Answer : The Lisbon Earthquake
FQ: what is the last words of his book Candide? Answer: " we must cultivate our garden"
DQ: We know Voltaire was not an Optimist but would you consider him a pessimist?
DQ: Do you think the world we live in today is the best of all Possible worlds?
DQ: What meaning do you take from the words " We must cultivate our garden"

Link: So in the past I have posted a link to quotes from philosophers and I am going to do the same from Voltaire. In high school every time we had to take those writing assessments I always somehow found a way to incorporate a quote from Voltaire. My favorite quote of all time is one from him which says " Common Sense is not so common" Hopefully on this link you find some other interesting somewhat sarcastic quotes: http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/v/voltaire.html
