Thunder Dragons

Which philosopher do you agree with more between Kant and Mills? Why do you feel the way you do? Do the ends justify the means? Why? Are actions directly responsible for a person's morality?  Why?

  1. I agree with Mills more because I like his idea of utilitarianism. We should always do things for the greater good, regardless of whether or not it benefits us in any sort of way.
I believe that your actions play a part in a person's morality, but also your beliefs. Your morals are a result of your beliefs.

FQ-What is the Method of Cartesian Doubt and who created it?(It states that you should not accept anythings as true if there is the slightest possibility that it isn't, and was created by Descartes)
FQ- True or False. Descartes believed that you could trust your senses?(False)
FQ- Which Philosopher was a pessimist, and had a bleak view on humanity?(Blaise Pascal)
FQ- What did Pascal invent in 1642?(A mechanical calculating machine called the Pascaline)
FQ- What is pantheism and which Philosopher was a firm believer in this idea?(The belief that God is everything and Baruch Spinoza)

  2. Summary: We did a powerpoint describing two different philosophers and their point of view on morality and ethics. We provide a definition of their different points of view as a brief overview of their philosophy. The two philosophers we chose were Immanuel Kant and John Stuart Mill. At the end we give each philosopher a situation so we can apply their moral philosophy to modern controversial topics.

Jake Bruce--- Did research on Immanuel Kant and is the designated speaker for him.
Carson Odom--- Did extensive research on Immanuel Kant and provided several quotes.
Tori Hartline--- Did extensive research on Immanuel Kant and provided several quotes.
Brandy Barnes--- Did extensive research on Immanuel Kant and provided several quotes.
Gil Olerud--- Did extensive research on Immanuel Kant and provided several quotes.

Each researcher was asked to provide several questions, which they did and we pooled it all together in order to come up with better situations to lead us into new research.

Edward Davila is the designated speaker for John Stuart Mill
Lamonteze Pamell--- Did extensive research on John Stuart Mill and provided several quotes. Provided a series of flyers to be passed out much like a ballot so people can vote on their favorite of our two chosen philosophers.
Jordan Peffley---Did extensive research on John Stuart Mill and provided several quotes.
Zoe Ottley--- Did extensive research on John Stuart Mill and provided several quotes.
Neveisa Smith--- Did extensive research on John Stuart Mill and provided several quotes.

Each researcher was asked to provide several questions, which they did and we pooled it all together in order to come up with better situations to lead us into new research.

Toni Metheny--- worked with Jake Bruce in order to pool everyone's research together and place it into a powerpoint presentation to be presented to the class. He also did his own research.

Erica Butler--- provided several questions and research to possibly discuss during the presentation of our project.

If you did not show up for class today, then use the reply link and type your name so you can receive full credit for your participation in the project.

  4. I don't think actions are responsible for a persons morality. I think a person's morality can be based and observed by their actions rather than their actions being what makes their morality.

  7. Mill, the greater good can be easily seen today with modern government practice. Social programs such as Welfare are determined to be "handouts" for the "lazy" even though it was put in place for the needy. Even if abused, I believe that the one person who does need it out weighs the person or persons who abuse it.

DQ: Are we all predictable because we are planned (destiny), or is it a matter of patterns?

FQ: Who was Pascal first educated by? His Father, Étienne Pascal
