Philosoraptors

Today we actually talked about philosophy!!! We mainly talked about a number of things relating to God, life and death. I could only listen to one conversation at a time, so I only remember one of the questions that we left off with which was, do you think that if we die and go to Heaven or Hell we will remember the time spent on earth? Fell free to try and continue the conversations through comments, or just post a comment, link, and all the other things you need to skip the report paper and presentation.

This week I decided to dabble in the readings found in AP. AP this week continued on the description of Richard Rorty. The book mainly outlined his first eight essay which included topics such as truth and moral progress. I believe that writing on a topic such as true is something that could be very difficult to do, seeing as thought truth itself is very hard to describe in the first place. (really think about it, What is truth exactly?) I respect Rorty for his diverse writings.

DQ: Was Rorty truly the most important American Philosopher of his era?

FQ: How many different essays did Richard Rorty write?

  2. Our group was able to get a great discussion going, along with the floaters from group 3. We discussed the different religions and heaven and hell.
Everyone has their own belief or no belief at all, but it's all still a mystery. No one on earth will no if they are right or not. Once a person die the mystery is probably revealed, but those still alive have no way of knowing. For all we know it's all just faith each religious just hold onto to get them through this life. One thing we can do that is right is just respect each person opinion because yours may not be right just as well as you feel like the next person's belief, is wrong.
Do anyone even know if it's a heaven or hell? In the discussion we talked about maybe when one die that that's just all it is. A person is just dead and their soul doesn't go anywhere. If there is a heaven and hell how does that work? If in heaven a person has peace and joy, but in hell there will be torture. How is it possible to feel that torture with just a soul and not a fleshly body?

I assume that we do not have to start another post for the readings and can just put them all on here. Thanks Colton for getting us started on that. Have a great weekend and lets ALL try to get EXEMPT from the finals! :)

Hey guys, my group has been a bit disorganized since the projects, so we don't have anyone assigned for our author posts, so I figured I'd post on here to at least get myself taken care of.

  5. I guess since everyone has posted about PB and AP, I will make a post on LH:
I have to say, I don't think the chapter on Berkeley in Little History gave a very deep understanding of his ideas, and that you will get a much better grasp on where he was coming from using Philosophy Bites.

I wonder, has anyone read Candide? I have not, but I have learned about it in history classes before. At the end of this book, the last line says something along the lines of philosophy talk being all well and good, but we should really all just get to work.
I would have to agree with this, but only to some extent. While I don't think we should only work and never think about the world, or why we are here, or what will happen when we die (or any other philosophical discussions), I also think most of the progress is made through hard work. I guess that is opposite to Rorty, who said philosophy drives social progress. Hard to say what has more influence, but I think we need both.
DQ: What do you think? Voltaire or Rorty?
Actually, it just struck me that Voltaire's own philosophy brought about social change. He may not have admitted it, but writing Candide somewhat contradicts part of his point.

  8. Berkeley thought that nothing exist if it wasn't being observed. Maybe once you leave your bedroom it no longer exist while you are not in it. The refrigerator was the only thing I could see that probably could make sense. I use to wonder about that myself when I was little, but now I know that there is a little switch in there that the door pushes against and turns the light off once door is closed. I guess Berkeley would argue that we re4ally don't know if that is what happens when the door close and therefore can not really know if the light goes off. I guess I could say maybe he never existed and he was just a thought of writers imagination, since I have not seen him. How do I really know that at one time he existed. He probably would agree with me.
