Group ThunderDragon Post

Today, in class we discussed the conditional morality that brought about the idea of certain immoral actions being moral under certain circumstances such as lying to protect a friend, stealing a knife from suicidal people about to kill themselves. The group had different opinions on this matter. We also talked about how we as people can be stuck in the routine of society and forget to stop and smell the roses. We lose our ability to think and become intolerant of any other view or perspective other than our own. We also talked about seeing the world through different lenses. All of us have our own experiences in life that will make us respond differently to this discussion. Each of you has something that neither I nor the person beside me can offer. All of our inputs are valuable.  Try to employ each of these ideas into your answer.

1.) Situation: You have the fate of the world in your hands. A group of 5 terrorists have held the entire world hostage with the largest bomb ever created. Your 8 year old sister has the cure for every disease known to mankind within her bloodstream. The terrorists are trying to stop this cure from getting out into the world. They come to you with a simple trade; your sister for the world. Would you make the trade? Why? Would you trust them? Why? What in your personal life has influenced your decision in this particular situation.

I would not make the trade simply because of the fact that she is my sister. Growing up as an only child I never understood that bond that siblings have with one another, but I always understood that blood is thicker then water. Family was and will always be the most important thing to me, and no matter what the circumstances are I would never let that blind my decision in this particular situation. If i would do the trade, I may have saved the world, but I lost a part of me while doing so.

  2. I believe I would take the trade and save the world from the terrorists, because I know that the familial ties among the world are just as important as my own. Given a chance to preserve that, I would in a heartbeat even if that meant having to give up something that I hold so dear. Not to mention that if my sister was raised the same way I was, she wouldn't want the world to suffer if she had to choose. She would more than likely want to give herself to save the world.

  3. What a crazy situation, I love my sister too much to trade her for the world. If me and my sister both had to die for the world, we would probably take that upon ourselves together. I love people, I love the world, I love my sister.

FQ: Does Aristotle believe true happiness could be acquired in a single moment or does it require a longer life? Answer: He believes it requires longer life

  6. I would simply withdraw some of my sisters blood and have scientist do some research. I am pretty sure that they will be able to come up with something that will save the world. Trust the mitus touch!!!

  7. It depends on which sister it is, haha. Just kidding. But there could be alternative methods of saving the world I'm sure. There is no black or white area, there is usually a gray area .
FQ- What was the "chain" of Philosophers(who "taught" who)?
DQ- Do you think Aristotle's views about eudaimonia and what the people we love do after death affects us? Why or why not? How does one define happiness?

  8. Absolutely not. I wouldn't trade human being, yet alone my sister, for the world. What's the world got to offer that's more than a relationship to a sibling? A bond is created like no other when one has a brother or sister.

FQ - What was the school set up in Athens by Aristotle called? (Answer: Lyceum)
DQ: Do you side with Aristotle's, Plato's, or Socrates' teaching more and why?

  10. That's a terrible situation... I would not be confident in or comfortable with either choice.
