The A-Team (16-1)

In class today we discussed the impact of Darwins's On the Origin of Species on philosophy. In our discussion we brought up the scenario of the world ending and there actually being a God... considering he basically created atheism, how much would people and/or God hate Darwin?

We also talked about John Stuart Mill, who is my favorite thus far. Dr. Oliver talked about how JSM sought happiness by limiting his desires, and that had Buddhist feel to it. Our group seemed to disagree with Mill's theory that people will always prefer to do things on a higher intellectual level, some people just want to role in mud.

I am going skydiving tomorrow so if im not in class monday check the obituaries.

Good luck with the sky dive and I feel that I disagree with Mill's theory too because being raised in the south I know a thing or two about rolling in the mud. They are not called Rednecks for nothing.

(16-1) I like some of Mill's ideas, especially on personal freedom. But I don't really agree with his ideas on different levels of quality for happiness. There are many people who would get very little pleasure out of listening to a symphony and would much prefer to do something that Mill would consider lower, such as playing sports or even rolling in the mud.

  3. I strongly disagree with JSM on the point that one achieves greater pleasure from more intellectual activities. I believe that we learn to like things as we develop. People may just develop differently on a cognitive level and get pleasure from different activities as a result.

I agree with Johnathan. People aren't all raised the same and develop later than others. There are too many variables to say one can achieve pleasure from more intellectual activities without considering everything else first.

  5. Hope you had fun sky diving! I liked Mill as a philosopher but I, as well, did not agree with his point on higher intellectual thoughts of fun. I would really like to read "Either/Or" by Kierkegaard because the way he set it up from two different points of view is really interesting to me.

  6. I'd have to agree with the general consensus here: there are definitely different kinds of people all with different ideas of fun, so you can't really say people all prefer the intellectual kind. I'm sure there are even plenty of intellectual people who like to have fun doing stupid things.

I have learned a lot about Marx in my sociology class his semester. I think that it is interesting on how a lot of people feel when they hear his name or the word communism. I used to think it was all negative. But I have learned that there hasn't actually been a nation to have true communism, it's actually been more like socialism.

FQ: True or false? Marx spent most of his life in poverty? (True)

  9. I would have to disagree with Mill's with his concept of there being different levels and qualities of happiness. I don't believe that there are different levels of happiness, I believe that a person can either be happy or not.

    FQ: Who wrote Either/Or: Kierkegaard
DQ: Based off of Mill's theories of happiness, could there be different levels or qualities of sadness? or other emotions
