A collaborative search for wisdom, at Middle Tennessee State University and beyond... "The pluralistic form takes for me a stronger hold on reality than any other philosophy I know of, being essentially a social philosophy, a philosophy of 'co'"-William James

Nameless Wanderers, Honors 3 Group 3
It occurred to me the other day that I've gotten the section of this class wrong pretty much since the beginning: H3 vs. H1. Maybe I'm just confused when I shouldn't be, but anyway today we engaged in a little more peripatetics. We began by talking a bit about existentialism, but then devolved into reading Shannon's boyfriend's face. We're just a bit distractible, I think. Anyways, we qualified our existence through our travels about the campus.

Factual: Who wrote Eichmann in Jerusalem? -Hannah Arendt
ReplyDeleteDiscussion: Do you think that Eichmann was as guilty as the Nazis that actually killed people? Or do you agree with him that he was just following orders and therefore not totally responsible for millions of people's death?
Comment: I really like doing peripatetics!

Factual: What did Bertrand Russell do in philosophy? (He worked in logic and the structure of language.)
ReplyDeleteDiscussion: How accurate is Russell's critique of somebody else I can't remember in saying that something cannot exist as an idea in our minds?
Comment: I maintain existentialism becomes dismal because it puts the burden of everything which happens to an individual on the shoulders of that individual--including (and in this case, especially) the terrible things which happen. Existentialism would say that all bad things which occur are the fault of that individual in some way. That's why existentialism is, at its logical conclusion, a dismal philosophy.

ReplyDeleteDQ: Do you agree that most philosophers are like flies trapped inside a bottle? Explain.
Comment: I've enjoyed our face reading discussions... But I think we should go back to normal discussion now.

Also, I probably won't be in class today. My throat is pretty sore and trekking across campus in this weather wouldn't help that. Sorry guys!
Peripatetics sounds fun!!!! I really like the idea of moving while moving your ideas too!
ReplyDeleteFQ: What did Kuhn call an event in which a whole way of understanding is overturned? a paradigm shift.
ReplyDeleteDQ: Do you agree with Kuhn that the history of scientific discovery can be summed up by various paradigm shifts?
Comment: I have enjoyed our recent peripatetic discussions, but I would prefer if we resumed normal discussion.
