Comment: Amazingly, we managed to stay moderately on task today. It seems like the more comfortable people get with each other, the more likely the conversation is to go a variety of directions. One reason I don't like floating, since it disrupts our diverse (and amusing) conversation. Also, I think we should integrate into our discussion reading the faces of the various philosophers, especially to note the similarities and differences, then to track those against their different personalities and philosophies.

Factual: Whom did Hegel call "loathsome and ignorant"? (Arthur Schopenhauer.)

Discussion: What do you guys think of Schopenhauer's notion that we were all a part of some central life force? How does that give humanity any kind of intrinsic value, since it seems to make protecting human life something which is done in self-interest, not out of any kind of self-less altruism? How is his philosophy of reality different from Kant's, since it seems rather copycat?

Link 2: http://www.britannica.com/media/full/14147 This is a great image for reading his face, if anyone is interested in doing so in class.

Link 4: Kant, just for comparison, especially since he comes back into play briefly for Schopenhauer: http://cdn8.openculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/immanuel-kant.jpg This picture isn't all that great, but it was what I could find.

  2. Factual Question: Who was accused by his academic colleagues of "opinionated arrogance''? - B.F. Skinner

Factual Questions 2: What is "Commencement Addressism"? - the commonsense view that everyone should become all he or she can be in life.

Factual Questions 3: Who received the Pulitzer Prizer for his series of books, Children in Crisis- Robert Coles

Factual Question 4: Who believed that art made life bearable? - Arthur Schopenhauer

Factual Question 5: What was Hegel's Dialectics? -someone puts forth a thesis, then there is an antithesis which is a contradiction of the thesis. Then a synthesis emerges.

DIscussion Question: Do you agree with Hegel that history is going somewhere or do you think it is a series of things without an overall plan?

Discussion Question 2: Do you agree with Schopenhauer's foundation of all morality (harming other people is a kind of self-injury; if I kill you, I destroy a part of the life force that joins us all together?)

Comment: I think that our last exam was much harder than our first one.

  3. Comment: Hard to laugh when you're stuffing your face with candy.

Fact: Hegel was an ______. (idealist)

Discussion: Do you feel that Schopenhauer was right that humans will never be content with what we have, and will always want something better? Or can we learn to appreciate what we have?

Link: http://www.notable-quotes.com/h/hegel_georg_wilhelm_friedrich.html Hegel was very quotable.

  4. (I didn't see a post up for my group, and I don't have author privileges, so I hope you guys don't mind if I post in here?)

Factual question: Who is the Roman goddess of wisdom, and the namesake of Hegel's viewpoint in philosophy? (Answer: Minerva)

Discussion Question: How do you view history? Do you view it as a story? As fact? As a folded sheet of paper, as described in the book? And why?

One of these days, I would really like to float to you guys' group. I feel like you guys have really interesting discussions. And funny, too, apparently.

Link: http://www.hegel.org/index.html A link to The Hegel Society of America. Because apparently, that exists.

  5. Fact: In what work did Hegel discuss the struggle between master and slave? The Phenomenology of Spirit (1807).

Discuss: Do you believe Hegel's dialectical method can move us closer to truth? I.E. "from the clash of two positions, a more complex, third position is emerges." = a synthesis of the two, then the process repeats.

Comment: Hope everyone did well on the test.

I didn't see a post for my group.... so here it goes, sorry. :(

Factual question: What philosopher 's message was very close to Buddha's and believed we would have been better to not have been born? A: Arthur Schopenhauer

Discussion question: Do you agree with Hegel's view on change being an increase in self awareness, but self awareness being fixed upon the time in which you live? Why or why not?

Comment: I was a floater for my group and when I left we had begun discussing religion, although there wasn't much talk of it before I left. When I went to group 2 they were discussing freedom and it was interesting to see different people's view on freedom and how people can be free in a government with rules.
