Comment: Amazingly, we managed to stay moderately on task today. It seems like the more comfortable people get with each other, the more likely the conversation is to go a variety of directions. One reason I don't like floating, since it disrupts our diverse (and amusing) conversation. Also, I think we should integrate into our discussion reading the faces of the various philosophers, especially to note the similarities and differences, then to track those against their different personalities and philosophies.
Factual: Whom did Hegel call "loathsome and ignorant"? (Arthur Schopenhauer.)
Discussion: What do you guys think of Schopenhauer's notion that we were all a part of some central life force? How does that give humanity any kind of intrinsic value, since it seems to make protecting human life something which is done in self-interest, not out of any kind of self-less altruism? How is his philosophy of reality different from Kant's, since it seems rather copycat?

Discuss: Do you believe Hegel's dialectical method can move us closer to truth? I.E. "from the clash of two positions, a more complex, third position is emerges." = a synthesis of the two, then the process repeats.

Discussion question: Do you agree with Hegel's view on change being an increase in self awareness, but self awareness being fixed upon the time in which you live? Why or why not?
Comment: I was a floater for my group and when I left we had begun discussing religion, although there wasn't much talk of it before I left. When I went to group 2 they were discussing freedom and it was interesting to see different people's view on freedom and how people can be free in a government with rules.
