I think that the world, indeed, is as we see it and is a proper representation of reality. You avoid walking into building by seeing them, avoid getting closer to the skunk by using your smell, and walk away from a speaker if it gets too loud for your ear drums.

Yes, by harming another you could be damaging yourself in a number of ways. To name a few you could be putting yourself/family in harms way, you could damage your reputation, you could damage your sanity.
