Nameless 8 we were, the Unknown 6 w've become

so today's test wasn't near as bad as the first, and i'm sure I speak for sooo many in the class we I say Thank You Dr Oliver, for that!!! not too much time for him to talk t us today since he's "timing" himself again lol.  group discussion was interesting, as we bounced around from one random subject to the next, but it made sense to us.....from the trolley theory to thoughts of "normalcy" (whatever that word means). I think that's actually a very valid question: what IS normal? and WHO decides what it means? Any thoughts on this??? im highly intrigued!!! Also, does anyone have any suggestions they'd like to throw out for our next presentation? I'm hoping for something completely outside the box! Anywho, all is well philosophically and I hope everyone has a terrific weekend!! looking forward to further discussins monday

  1. Didn't seem easier or harder to me. Maybe it's not the test, or just the test, that's different?

You know we're not doing collaborative reports again, right?

  2. I think normal is however you percieve it. Yes, there are 'norms' we follow in society. But on a more specific level, what may be normal to one person, may not be normal to another. I see these simple things defined very differently between people every day. In my opinion, they are so miniscule that people waste their time on it.

Norms are norms. They are designed by a group and should be followed. If person disagrees with a norm then that is his or her opinion which does not change the actual definition of a certain norm.

(16-1) I think a person's normality is based on how many similarities one shares with other people. The more you have in common with more people in your society, the more "normal" you are.

I think that the test was easier also and I barley studied. I listened to one of my favorite songs over the weekend and found some philosophical meaning about life in it check it out and see if you do to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUMgE7_vVSw

  6. I enjoyed our discussion we had on Wednesday. It was nice to have the whole gang there pretty much. I liked talking about the changing meaning of normalcy and deviance, and I enjoyed speaking on Kant and his search for moral reasoning behind every action. I can't say I agree with him though because I feel that empathy is a major component of morality, and helping someone regardless of the nature of why you're doing it and how you're doing it, can be justified as moral. In many situations, the ends justify the means.
Factual Question (derived from LH): What is the expression used to mean that philosophical ideas and wisdom can only be acquired when we look back on what has happened in the past? ("The Owl of Minerva flies only at dusk).
Discussion Question: How has your perception regarding social issues and the confusing questions of life changed over time? How different is your perception as an adult when compared to the ideas you had as a child and teenager?
For my link I'm posting a page listing Monty Python's best philosophical sketches, including the philosopher's drinking song that Dr Oliver mentioned in class: http://www.openculture.com/2011/11/monty_pythons_flying_philosophy.html
