Section 16, Group 3

Hi group,

Today Dr. Oliver talked about several different philosophers and their ideas. The challenging of the idea of "free will", what "evil" means, whether people are naturally good or bad... lots of information. We also spent some time discussing some of these ideas in our group -- but our main focus was the group project. We all agreed on the Facebook Group idea, so here's the link:

It's a closed group so that it's exclusive to us, so request to join and I'll accept you as soon as I get the notification.
Let me know if there's anything wrong with the link or if you're having trouble joining/posting/whatever.

FQ: What Italian saint outlined arguments that were meant to demonstrate that God exists? (Thomas Aquinas)

DQ:Thomas' first argument takes upon the point of the existence of the cosmos...which is everything that there is. So, think of an object. Where did is come from exactly from a point of origin?

group Comment is on last week's post and other comment is on 16,1.

FQ: How old was John Dewey when he died? (93)

DQ: The university of Paris awarded Dewey an honorary doctrine in 1930, it described him as "the most profound, most complete expression of American Genius." How did he achieve this status. Page 87 is a hint.

FQ: Born in the 13th century, who was the most significant philosopher of the medieval period, trained as a priest, joined the Dominican Order, and then later became a theologian.
    (Thomas Aquinas)

DQ: Aristotle's ethics will tell you to live a happy, fulfilling life while on Earth. Aquinas agrees with Aristotle's ethics, but him being a Christian, makes modifications to Aristotle's ethics and says happiness awaits in heaven. "What is your ideal happiness and what does the idea of happiness mean to you?"

  4. (16-2) I think ideal happiness comes from living with morality and also living within accordance to whatever creed you believe in.

(I posted this already, but it's not showing it anymore, so I apologize if this ends up being posted twice)

FQ: Which philosopher's reasoning for God's existence was that if you can imagine such a perfect being, he must exist?
    (Anselm)

DQ: Do you think these philosophers had convincing arguments for God's existence? Do you believe that God's existence could be logically proven at all?

The talk of how in order to find something's origin you have to keep going further and further back reminded me of this quote by Carl Sagan: "If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe."

I personally don't believe people are born good or evil. The nature of a person's character doesn't seem to be determined at birth, but rather through a complicated process of socialization and psychology factors that come in to play during a person's social experience. Through this experience a person can resemble either good or evil, depending on the perception and ideas of others.
