Section 16, Group 2 (The group with the tired author)

Hey guys,
I don't see a post from our other author, so I guess I am stuck taking care of it.
From what I remember, we spent class talking about our project. Everyone know about Boethius by next class! Anyway, we also discussed what everyone thought about how people choose religions and the like. I don't remember specifics since I was not expecting to be posting this week, but that was the rub of our discussion.

  1. I'll try to become an author if need be.

FQ: In what book did Thomas Aquinas outline his five arguments for the existence of God? (Summa Theologica)
DQ: Guanilo criticized Anselm's reasoning that the very idea of God proved his existence. He used an example of a perfect island, but Anselm argued that God is the only necessarily existing being. Could you accept that theory or would you side with Guanilo?

I'd have to say I'm on Guanilo's side. I can't understand Anselm's reasoning at all: just because we can imagine a perfect being, it must exist? Maybe I'm misunderstanding his argument, but it doesn't make any sense to me.

  4. Posting here because I haven't seen a post by group 1 from last class yet. I'd like to know more about Boethius's philosophy on a timeless existence. Actually, I recently came across an article on how scientists may now be able to prove that the universe is indeed timeless with the discovery of the amplituhedron, but I can't find it at the moment, so I'm just going to link to a video talking about the potential for a timeless dimension.

FQ: Which Greek philosopher did Aquinas share in his foundation of ethical beliefs?
DQ: Is it more important to consider ethics with or without the dimension of religion being involved?

Hello Jonathan you have a really good factual question, however you forgot to include the answer in your post.

  5. FQ:Boethius wrote "De consolatione philosophiae" where? (prison)

DQ: Do you agree with Boethius' views on free-will?

I hope we have more to talk about next time!

I agree that Aquinas's idea that God must exist because we can imagine him doesn't make much sense,

What would the world be like with no religions? Or perhaps just one the entire world believed in?

I feel that there would still be something people would worship because religion is also very cultural and brings people together.
