A-Team..16-1
Today we didn't talk in our group but instead tried to organize our upcoming group report. Which by the way on October 1st. We will also be preparing for our first exam which will be September 30th. Beforehand Prof. Oliver discussed our previous reading on Epictetus Cicero and Seneca. Whilst doing so he also explained the difference between a skeptic and a stoic.

First off, which philosopher founded the restrained style of teaching still used today? (Augustine)
ReplyDeleteDo you think there could be better ways to teach in schools?
We talked about probably deciding on the philosophy of Batman, the novel not the book. I feel that it could either be a big hit or a big miss. Many people might argue that the ideas associated with Batman are very psychological rather than philosophical because the main characters of Batman are often perceived as mentally ill.
On the other hand, there are many ideas on vigilantism and individual initiative that could be useful for our project. So, I'm not condemning this topic.
What do you guys think?
Here is an article on Batman and philosophy. He talks about Kant also! Love that guy.

I meant the novel not the *Character.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of doing Batman as our project. Mainly because he's my favorite superhero. FQ: What was Augustine most known for?
ReplyDeleteDQ: What impact would Augustine have today in teaching?
Heres a link about Augustine http://www.philosophypages.com/ph/augu.htm
The Batman idea could work, but I'm also open to other options as well. I am bringing the book to class tomorrow so we will see how everyone else feels about it.
ReplyDeleteFQ: Did Augustine believe in God? (yes)
DQ: Do many philosophers believe in God?
Here's a link to summarize Augustine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-t1HEoU6dE
FQ: What was Augustine's solution to why moral evil exists? (Free Will)
ReplyDeleteDQ: In a theological sense, why do natural disasters occur?
I think batman would be an interesting topic for the project with the vigilantism and trying to save a city that already 'condemned'. There's probably a lot of philosophical ideas out work once you begin to pick it apart. If we decide to go another route though, I looked at the Blackwell site and they have books on a lot of good shows. Supernatural, Superman, Spiderman, Game of Thrones, Big Bang Theory, Walking Dead. To end, here's a youtube video talking about batman and philosophy.

I love the Batman idea. It is very interesting but, most characters are very mentally unstable if you could incorporate the philosophy aspect then it would be interesting.

(16-1) I'm really liking our Batman idea. Super heroes are such cultural icons, it will be interesting to see how one relates to philosophy. Here is the link to a video about Iron Man and Philosophy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnXzaqKSiDM
ReplyDeleteFQ- What book did Boethin write that made him famous after his death? (The Consolation of Philosophy)
DQ- Are our choices and actions predetermined?
Doing Batman would be great, would definitely keep us entertained during the presentation.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of linking philosophy with pop culture! I can't wait to see your presentation!
ReplyDeleteBatman and philosophy would be awesome! Can't wait to hear about it!
ReplyDeleteI am not opposed to the batman idea, but i think we should look at other options as well. For our report do we want to have everyone do a 5 min presentation or do we want half the group to do research and the other half present?
ReplyDeleteFQ: Who was the lady that is looking down at Boethius in his prison cell? ( Philosophy)
DQ: Do you think God is "all powerful" or is he/she fighter an ongoing battle against evil?
Link on Boethius: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1uBJ1NstJ4
I think that doing our group presentation on the philosophy of batman would be very interesting.
ReplyDeleteFQ: What philosopher wrote a medieval bestseller called The Consolation of Philosophy in prison ? -Boethius
DQ: Who do you think is responsible for the evil in our world?
