"The pluralistic form takes for me a stronger hold on reality than any other philosophy I know of, being essentially a social philosophy, a philosophy of 'co'"-William James
Our group got together once again to discuss our group midterm report.
Not discussing most of the reading for the fact the we are the first group to present. We discussed who was goi to do the group summary and collect the questions for the exam
Assigning a question to each subgroup seems to be a more effective way to do this project. Glad it was suggested. I know it makes it easier for me anyway.
FQ: What is Niccolo Machiavelli's most famous work? (The Prince) DQ: What qualities are ideal in our political leaders today?
Here's a link to an intro the Machiavellian philosophy- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwqAdbKoF5s
alright writing my post on this group because my authors are slackin and I'm not trying to do that end report thing....so here is me rounding the bases.
I liked Dr. Oliver's topic. It was rather interesting to hear his side of things.
FQ: Who was one of England's greatest political thinkers? (Thomas Hobbes) DQ: Hobbes had a generally low view of human beings. What do you think about humans?
FQ: Working as a diplomat and then later becoming a political theorist, ______ is the author of "The Prince" and also the playwright "Mandragola?" (Answer:Machiavelli)
DQ: What is your opinion on the statement mentioned in PBB on page 49 that "willing to do evil in order that good may come of it?"
5 minute excerpt of "The Prince" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6NmgQ_-OL0
I think i am a fan of Machiavelli! Although not always ethical, that guy was a badass. I was so intrigued that i bought "The Prince" as soon as i got done reading the Philosophy Bites Back section.
FQ: Who was Machiavelli's hero among the Roman Emperors? (Septimius Severus) DQ: Machiavelli was a consequentialist, believing that sometimes you have to do evil things as long as the end result is good. Are actions like the nuclear bomb or torture ok if the end result is a positive one?

Everyone should try and turn their notes into Ben tomorrow in class, and then we can do further discussion at Donut Country Sunday if we need to. Glad we got the questions handed out. FQ: What did Machiavelli like to write about the most? (politics) DQ: Is it a bad idea to be completely honest with the people when you are a politician? Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwqAdbKoF5s
16-2 My group hasn't posed yet so I am posting my questions here. I agree with Machiavelli's description of what a good leader should be. Since that won't apply to most of us, criticizing his philosophies in greater detail would be wasteful. Also, I agreed with Hobbes about a more centralized way of governing the society.
FQ: What is the name of the book that Hobbes wrote? (Leviathan)
DQ: Do you agree with Machiavelli's belief that half of what happens is up to chance and half is a result of our choices and that acting bravely and swiftly improve the odds of success?
Here is a link to a 3 min video on Thomas Hobbes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuq0fOfE-hc
I think it's interesting about how many philosophers get theirselves in trouble. I wonder if any of them mentioned so far actually tried to plot against their ruler or if the rulers made it up as to stop them from getting the masses to question things in life instead of just accepting everything. FQ: What English political thinker is less well known as an early fitness fanatic? - Thomas Hobbs DQ: From the description of Machiavelli's book , The Prince, do you feel that it is an evil book or a sensible guidebook for leaders? Do you think we should be cruel or nice to our subjects?
