  1. Assigning a question to each subgroup seems to be a more effective way to do this project. Glad it was suggested. I know it makes it easier for me anyway.

FQ: What is Niccolo Machiavelli's most famous work? (The Prince)
DQ: What qualities are ideal in our political leaders today?

Here's a link to an intro the Machiavellian philosophy- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwqAdbKoF5s

I am glad we all agreed on our topics and are starting to get work done now. I still need notes for the powerpoint!

True or False: Machiavelli was an evil minded ruler while Hobbes was a jolly and friendly ruler. (False)

Do you think we should be cruel or nice to our subjects?

  7. I think i am a fan of Machiavelli! Although not always ethical, that guy was a badass. I was so intrigued that i bought "The Prince" as soon as i got done reading the Philosophy Bites Back section.

DQ: Machiavelli was a consequentialist, believing that sometimes you have to do evil things as long as the end result is good. Are actions like the nuclear bomb or torture ok if the end result is a positive one?

My group hasn't posed yet so I am posting my questions here.
I agree with Machiavelli's description of what a good leader should be. Since that won't apply to most of us, criticizing his philosophies in greater detail would be wasteful. Also, I agreed with Hobbes about a more centralized way of governing the society.

FQ: What is the name of the book that Hobbes wrote? (Leviathan)

DQ: Do you agree with Machiavelli's belief that half of what happens is up to chance and half is a result of our choices and that acting bravely and swiftly improve the odds of success?

I think it's interesting about how many philosophers get theirselves in trouble. I wonder if any of them mentioned so far actually tried to plot against their ruler or if the rulers made it up as to stop them from getting the masses to question things in life instead of just accepting everything.
FQ: What English political thinker is less well known as an early fitness fanatic?
    - Thomas Hobbs
DQ: From the description of Machiavelli's book , The Prince, do you feel that it is an evil book or a sensible guidebook for leaders?
