Introductions

Our first homework assignment:

M 26/T27 - GETTING ACQUAINTED. Introduce yourself by replying online (before our 2d class meeting) to this post, and read classmates' introductions. Address these questions as personally and as philosophically as you like: Who are you? Why are you here? (in this class, at this school, in this state & nation, on this planet...)  Please include your section # (H, 16, or 17) with your first name.

(Bear in mind, this site is not filtered or segregated from the rest of the web... so, be as circumspect as you think you must. There's no reason to think Grandma or the Big Bad Wolf are lurking, but you never know.)

  1. I'll start. I'm Dr. Phil Oliver ("James Philip" on the birth certificate). I've been teaching at MTSU for over a decade. I was born in Missouri, got my undergrad degree at Mizzou and a PhD in Philosophy at Vanderbilt. I live in Nashville with my wife and daughter, a High School student. Another daughter is just beginning college in Memphis. (I've sort of gotten used to my commute.) I'm fond of my dogs, slightly less fond of our cat. I like baseball but have come to detest football, for the violence it inflicts on its players and on the sensibility of some of its fans and (along with other major college athletics) on the university's academic integrity. But I should really save that diatribe for later. Go Blue!

I teach courses on Atheism & Philosophy, Bioethics, Environmental Ethics, and the Philosophy of Happiness (among others).

I'm an early riser, and like to write first thing in the morning while sipping my coffee. I also like to integrate my teaching, writing, blogging, tweeting, and living as much as possible. Hence the links at the top of this page to my most recent "Up@dawn" posts, which often pertain to the upcoming day's course content.

Why am I here? Because I was bitten by the philosophy bug in college, was given a scholarship to pursue my studies at Vanderbilt, married a Tennessean, and was offered a job by MTSU. Beyond that, well... why we think we're here is a discussion we'll be having throughout the semester. I'm looking forward to it!

Hey everyone! My name is Savannah Shipman. I live here in Murfreesboro and will be graduating in the Spring. I am currently applying to multiple graduate schools all over the country. I believe this is a great time to be in a philosophy class because I am currently at a crossroads in my life where I may take many different paths. I enjoy exploring differing philosophies, making connections to my own life, and working on my book which relies heavily on my own opinions of life, influenced by all things I come into contact with. I look forward to this semester! :)

I am a grouping of atoms forming molecules, forming compounds, forming macromolecules, forming DNA, forming organelles, forming cells, forming tissues, forming organs, forming an organ system, forming an organism, forming sentience, and forming the all to interesting questions of who am i, and why am i here? First and foremost i am a Human. Beyond that i am an individual both like and unlike everyone else in a vast amount of ways. I am Evan Mason, but i have gone by many names in the past. I am a biologist. I am a Martial Artist studying the art and philosophy of Wing Chun. I am an Altruistic being here to help others. I love to learn and love to live life. I live by the code of the wolf and it has become a large part of my philosophy on life.

I am here for two reasons
      1. 42
      2. To learn philosophy.
      -many other functions

And to spread the wonder an happiness life has to offer to those who do not see life as such a wonderful gift. To live, to learn, to philosophize, and to hopefully one day find the question to life, the universe, and everything, or at least find Marvin and make him tell me.

  2. I am a student at MTSU studying Computer Engineering. I've been a student for a long time, and while amassing over 130 credit hours has been nothing short of delightful, employers seem to think that doesn't actually qualify me for anything. So in the pursuit of said degree, and due to Universities not having any well thought out method for having common degree requirements nor any ability to transfer credits in a logical manner, I find myself in need of another Humanities course. So here I am. Why Philosophy? Because I've taken enough English and History courses to last me through several undergraduate degrees, and it is probably time I branched out. I look forward to hearing your insights and input and working with you all in the near future.

  3. Kristin (16) I am a freshman majoring in Global Studies because I love learning about other cultures and plan to study abroad. I live in Murfreesboro, so I came to MTSU because it was the most convenient option. Since I like learning about different ways of thinking, and I had to pick something, I thought philosophy could be an interesting class.

  4. Andrew (16) I am a Junior at MTSU majoring in Electro Mechanic Engineering. I have switched majors twice, once each year, but am hoping to have finally found my calling. I was born in Indiana but was raised in Franklin Tennessee.

I choose to take a philosophy class both because it was a general requirement and to hopefully answer the questions "Who am I?" and "Why am I here" or even "What is the meaning of life".

  5. Ricky (16) Straight-forwardly answering the questions, I'm from Oakland, California..I'm a sophomore majoring in Criminal Justice Administration. I switched from Mechanical Engineering because I realized it really wasn't something I wanted to do. In the list of classes, philosophy stuck out to me so I decided to give it a shot.

Hi,Philosophy fans. Up there is my name and I am from China. I've been in USA for about 2 years. Everything goes on just great here. I'm a pre-nursing major and already have a psychology bachelor degree. I think Philosophy is a course that could make people smarter,it is also a subject that people always fight on. I'm looking forward to having a debate based on some international Philosophy gap since I am from Asia. *_*

    1. The international Philosophy gap may be narrower than the intra-national, in some ways. There are aspects of Tennessee life that are still alien to me, and I've lived here for over 30 years. But did you know that John Dewey was hugely popular in China in the 1920s & 1930s? Or that Emerson and Thoreau were profoundly influenced by Asian philosophy?

Anyway, I still marvel at your fluency in spoken English. And envy it. I look forward to hearing your perspective on the amazing changes that have come to your homeland in recent years.

I also do have a business in which I sell services that we use everyday like internet, tv, cell phone, home phone, etc. for residents and business. I personally enjoy philosophy because it is a subject that entertains me every time. I always learn something new from it. I have taken Latin before. I plan on learning more that I can use anytime I get into a debate with someone on this subject.

  18. Hi! My name is Molly Brown (17) and I am a student at MTSU. This is my second year at MTSU. I came to college right out of high school. I am majoring in Psychology to become a clinical psychologist. Therefore, I have a lot of class ahead of me. I am going full time and working part time at GBYGuess. I drive to campus from Smyrna. I just recently moved out of my parents house. It makes the drive shorter to work and school. I said this in class but I will remind everyone the reason I am at MTSU is because I have moved so many times before college that unlike all my other classmates in high school that wanted to get away from TN I wanted to finally stay somewhere. So MTSU meet that requirement for me. I hope that MTSU can make my life plans happen for me as I am putting in the work to make it work out. I am pretty driven and out going kind of person. I ask a lot of questions so I believe this class is right where I am suppose to be and I also am not just earning my general credit I am working on learning more about topics for the field of psychology because I think Philosophy goes hand and hand. Although, I am not a big reader I am keeping an open mind to this course.

  24. Hi, my name is Seneca. I am taking this Philosophy class because I had a good experience with my two high school philosophy classes, and hope to relive that experience of learning other's ideas. MTSU's horse science program is why I'm at this school.

Yet, for a more philosophical level, I am here on this earth for the purpose of loving and enjoying God and His creation. Soren Kierkegaard (commonly referred to as the first existentialist philosopher) says, "God creates out of nothing. Wonderful you say. Yes, to be sure, but He does what is still more wonderful: he makes saints out of sinners." I believe that we could all come to the point of existentialism, feeling as though the world is meaningless, unless we either 1. believe in the hope (future certainty) that Christ will restore the world to perfection or 2. find another way to just "cope" in this messy life.

Anyway, this is just a preview of my thoughts on why I am here. More thoughts to come during class and on this blog. I am also looking forward to hearing many other worldviews!!!

If I may add to this, I would like to point out that existentialism is the central philosophy to all philosophies. Everything that we do in philosophy all center around existence, so every question we ask about who we are, what we do, and why we do it eventually comes back to how and why we exist in the first place. That's why things like absolute truth are so important to discuss since how we view life directly changes our actions. I, for one, find worldview discussions intensely exciting. This class shall be one to remember.

      Delete
    2. Indeed, I do agree that existentialism- discussing existence- is the basis for all philosophies.
I did, however, mean to imply that existentialism, as a worldview, exudes a hopeless feeling; and I believe that in observing this world, one would have to come to the conclusion that something is not right. I believe this feeling causes me to look to Christ and the Gospel, which acknowledges the futility of life, but also gives us meaning TO LIVE and to look to Him for a hope (future certainty) of becoming restored to an meaningful and perfect world.
I also agree with you that discussing subjects like absolute truth is extremely exciting, and I, too, look forward to this class with anticipation!

I must agree with your analysis on the philosophy of existentialism itself. Well said, indeed.

  28. Hey there,

My name is Leigh Stanfield (HNR), and I'm a sophomore majoring in Communication Studies with a minor in Business Law. As for who I am, I suppose I am a...I don't want to just say writer, because while I do fit the bill, the bill doesn't fit me. Not entirely. Wordsmith, perhaps, would be a better name for it? Because while I enjoy writing - I've written several books and a screenplay, and am currently in the process of writing another which I actually intend to pursue publication for - I also enjoy other forms of communication. Public speaking is actually one of my favorite things to do. Debate, presentations, Socratic-style seminars - I enjoy all of it. Just the chance to express my own ideas and hear everyone else's. Our grasp of complex language is one of the many marvels of mankind, and I like to use that gift to the fullest.

As for why I'm here, my reasons really vary. I've always enjoyed philosophy, just hearing the various perspectives people have had on the world and the people in it throughout history. It's truly fascinating to me to see how a singular species can have such a diverse interpretation of its surroundings.

I chose Honors philosophy particularly because I thought the smaller class and expectation of higher-level critical thinking would make for a more engaging experience with the class. I believe I'll take a lot from this class, and I hope to at least offer something in return along the way.

Unfortunately, my apartment doesn't allow pets, but I have one dog that lives at my house with my parents, who are MTSU employees. I am also an MTSU employee. I work in a chemistry lab on campus doing Chinese botanical medicine research. I would gladly share where I am from, but I've lived in 5 states and don't really know how to answer that question. I have lived in Murfreesboro for about 6 years now.

After class today, I don't feel like I fit in much. Like I said, I am a chemistry and math lover. I'm not familiar with many philosophers. Today's class was a bit intimidating because everyone was so well spoken and seemed far more educated in philosophy than I am, but I am eager to learn. Honestly, I am here in this class because I need 3 more honors credits this semester and my Buchanan friends recommended this class.

Addressing the specific comment of not fitting in, I would like to point out that philosophy doesn't have too much to do with the quality of one's presentation and far more to do with one's thought process. If you're conducting research into botanical medicine and are doing things with math and science, then you can surely think analytically. If anything, this class will stretch your mind in a new way which will strengthen it. Put some thought into the issues, and I think you'll do just fine.

      Hang in there!

    2. Hey Shannon.

Unfortunately, I'm horrid at putting names to faces, so I can't quite remember who you are. (I apparently have some sort of anterograde amnesia when it comes to that; it's an ongoing struggle). But for what it's worth, I'm not sure there really is such thing as "fitting in." We're all different; it's what makes things interesting. Besides, I know a lot of people - myself, for example - that would love to have your mad chemistry skills. So no worries! Look forward to seeing you in class Thursday!

I graduated from a tiny private school, so MTSU is quite the culture shock... As to why I'm in college, my goal in life is to run on the congressional ballot for Middle Tennessee. As to why I'm at MTSU, it's close to home and also very affordable. See ya'll in class tomorrow!

  41. hello my name is maiya. (16)I am a sophomore majoring in psychology and an undecided minor that could possibly become philosophy. Who am I? is a question I've always asked myself but never really found an answer to... besides being a weird mixed kid. Why am I here? well i could always find a answer to that one even if they fluctuated at different times in my life. Perhaps I am here because my father decided that 10 years in the CFL was enough and went home to be with his mother in her last years. After her death, although leaving unresolved situations in Canada we never went back and I was raised here. I am left to question the unknown reasons we never returned after her death, what my life would have been. at a young age I questioned everything and never stopped; leading me to believe that the reason I am here is to question everything in search of logical sense and never stop even if I don't find an answer.

I'm addicted to Green Day, The Beatles, and Christian Bale. I love learning anything that doesn't have black and white answers. I love to think and asks questions. I'm a creative human being who likes to express myself through art. I am one with the universe, and the universe is one with me.

I believe I'm here to enjoy the beauty of life and to feel emotions, to understand the life that Mother Earth has given us, and to welcome the unknown with open arms.

Guten Abend. You may tell from that opening that I know a little bit of German, not that knowing a little German will make a wit of difference in this class.

At any rate, I shall reproduce here in a slightly modified form what I said in class earlier. At the superficial, who I am can be explained by stating my name--Mitchell Brisbon (H)--the fact that I am a martial artist, soccer player, and avid debater. (I spent all of middle and high school engaged in the latter.) Taking things beyond the superficial facts of my interactions with other people, I identify myself as a Child of the One True King, along with a couple of others in the Honors section. If we really look at who I am on the inside, we see that Jesus has redeemed me to the Father in one of the most amazing ways possible. 'Tis a wonderfully neat thing that God has done, though.

Moving on, we come to why I am here. Again, looking at the superficial facts which other people see, I am in Honors Philosophy 1030 because it fulfills necessary Gen Ed hours, counts toward my major (if I recall correctly), and provides lower division Honors hours. Taken as an existential question, though, asking why I am here asks what my purpose in life is. The purpose of life (or, rather, one's perception of it) is determined by what sort of mindset one holds. As I've already stated, I am a Christian, so I believe that God has a purpose for every person who lives on this Earth; whether they live out that calling or not is another thing, but each person has something they are to do. My particular calling is to work in law (most probably) to revolutionize people's thinking about government and the purpose of government. The problem I see which requires a solution could be summarized by V's statement in "V for Vendetta": "...there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there?" I aim to carry out God's calling for my life to the best of my ability.

So, there is me. I am something of a radical in many of my views, a status I accept with a certain amount of pride. My good friends can tell you that I will argue about anything worth arguing about, so please engage me in argument. On the other hand, I will carry on an argument for quite a while if I can. I anticipate great discussion in this class, which will at least somewhat sate my appetite for argument.

You have me. If I may reference "V for Vendetta" again, I am very pleased to meet you, and you may call me Mitchell (or Mitch, whichever strikes your fancy).

    1. But on this most auspicious of blogs, permit me then, in lieu of the more commonplace reply, to quoth the character of this referenced persona: "Voila! In view humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the 'vox populi' now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin, van guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition.
Verily this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it’s my very good honour to meet you and you may call me [Leigh]."

Ah, well-played indeed. Fortunately, you do not wear a Guy Fawkes mask, so I am not under the obligation of asking who you are, only to be reminded of the "paradox of asking a masked man who he is" (or, in this case, woman).

Unfortunately, I do not have it, Seneca, but it can be gotten on DVD from Netflix. I will warn you, it has some violence in it (nothing terrible, but there are some mildly bloody scenes), but if that doesn't bother you, then enjoy the movie. I will also note that the end message leaves the viewer in moral limbo, but that makes it an interesting discussion point.

My name is Anna Partlow (H). As for who I am, on the surface I am a studious, and horse-crazy, teacher. People who knew me growing up would say I am a "Perfect Partlow"( A stereotype that has followed my family for years) and that I was the weird homeschooler who didn't need to be included. For those who I count as my friends growing up would say that I am a swimmer/soccer player and bookworm, who is passionate about my faith and life. My true identity lies in my belief in the one King. Every other part of my life stems from that, leading to what I am doing here. My goal is to serve people to the glory of God, and to do that I want to be more knowledgable. I am studying Special Education with a minor in Equine Science and my goal is to be the Equine Specialist at a stable with a focus on Equine Assisted Therapy. As for why I am in the class, partly because it fulfills not only a Gen Ed but also because it is Honors. But more importantly because it is a subject that I am not very familiar with but feel like it will be a time of growing for me in many areas. I am excited to see what this semester holds!!

(For once Anna can see this): That's a neat concentration for equine therapy. If you're not familiar with them already, I would recommend contacting Sequatchie Valley International Preparatory Academy (SVPA). It's an equine-based, Christian boarding school in Dunlap, TN, about an hour to hour and a half from Chattanooga. It might furnish an internship opportunity or job at some point in the future. We know them through speech and debate stuff, so tell them you're connected to the Brisbons, and they'll probably listen (I would hope).

Hi, my name is Kayla Foe (H). This is my third semester at college and my hope is to be accepted into the Nursing program here at MTSU, though the odds are most certainly not in my favor. Murfreesboro is all that I’ve truly ever known, aside from a week visit to Gatlinburg and another to Pittsburgh, PA, so I would describe myself as a restless soul. A part of me – the childish part that finds comfort in the familiar – wants to stay, because I know the streets and I have my family and friends; however, there is another part that wants to travel and gain an understanding of life outside Murfreesboro, outside Tennessee, and outside the U.S. That part of me loves to learn, and I hope to feed it this semester in this class, as I know little to nothing about philosophy. I prefer to observe rather than speak, and it seems to me that there will not be a shortage of ideas shared in this class. I’m looking forward to learning from and with you all.

  68. Anonymous12:33 AM CDT

I am Mitch (H). I am a junior: major-Biology, minor-Chemistry (I am contemplating a double major...but I am unsure). For the longest time I would have told anyone who met me that I knew exactly who I was. I would have told them that I was a Christian boy from a small town, who was a two time state championship football player who was beating the "Jock" stereotype to go and become a surgeon (I am aware that that sentence is probably a run on...english is by no means my area of expertise.) But since I got to college I have begun to see a new world unfolding before me, and frankly, that is unsettling. I feel that I no longer have a solid answer for the questions "Who am I?" and "Why am I here?”
I was a football player in a football town...and because of that, most people knew who I was, not because they knew me, but because they saw me on Friday nights. I was fine with that then, but I wish that maybe they would have tried to get to know me for me. I do not regret playing football at all, for it has given me very important skills that I might not have gotten otherwise (motivated, driven, goal-oriented, and a leader by example)
I am from a small town and looking back on home now, I see how close minded my town was. They did not readily accept those who were different or those who walked to the beat of their own drum. Now, I feel that EVERYONE has the right to be him/herself, no matter what other people think
As for the physician thing, I had a long hard talk with myself and finally came to the conclusion that the only real reasons that I wanted to be a surgeon were: 1. I love science and 2. I wanted lots of $$$. In my small town, physicians were the only people who got to use science on a daily basis, so ipso-facto, if I wanted to use science, then I needed to be a doctor (I knew that there were other ways to use science, but this was the only profession that I got to see first hand). After getting to Murfreesboro and meeting some of the Science professors here, I got a first hand look at my other options. Money was no longer a factor...If I can make enough to get by, then I will be happy as long as I enjoy getting up everyday and going to do something I loved (instead of going to work). Research seems much more fun than surgery anyways
As for being a Christian...I do not know what I believe anymore. I feel that I believed what I did because that is what my parents believed and that is what my parents wanted me to believe. I went to church and was involved there because that is what I felt was expected. Now, I am unsure of what I believe in...but I know that if I am going to believe in something, I want to believe in it because it is what I have chosen and not what another person has told me to believe (I know I said believe alot...sorry)
One thing that has not changed about me is that I am a thinker...I like to think things through before I respond. I prefer to think than to talk.
I have had two days to mull these questions over, and that is why this post is so very long
I suppose I should answer the questions now
    Who am I?
I am not entirely sure, other than I am a thinking individual with a sense of humor, who wants to better himself and the world around me
    Why am I here?
Again, I am not 100% sure, but I hope that it is to make the things better for myself and/or others
This is the first time I have shared some of these thoughts...so that is me.

My definition of philosophy is like an outline or a backbone of life. You have the way you view things, such as beliefs, religion, morals, so on and so forth. To be honest, I didn't really pay much attention to philosophy and didn't know any philosophers at all but after doing some reading in Philosophy Bites Back, I'm starting to like what I see from Socrates so as of right now he's my favorite but as the readings progress things might change. Do I have a philosophy? I've never really put much thought into it. Well the way I live life is to go through it all and live it through with little to no regrets.
