(16-1) SP Chapter 1

April 9, 2013
Group 1 met to discuss John Lachs book "Stoic Pragmatism". We mainly talked about how philosophy can contribute to society. Everyone felt that philosopher needed to bring their knowledge to the world and put their theories into practice. We also discussed at what age should children be asked philosophical questions. Some of us said not too young because children should be focused on having fun and children ask question anyways. There are other question in chapter 1 that we touched on. Can phylosphers produce public intellectuals today? Philosophy and Religion and the condition of American Philosophy today. So what do you think about these topics. Leave you comments down below.

  1. I think philosophy can and should be used in today's society. It is amazing to see so many different ideas that other people can come up with! Some of hem I would have never even thought of! This definitely should be used to help others and to answer many difficult questions that a normal person could not answer. I think that if you had to stamp an age at which a child is taught philosophy, I would say that they should start it at age 9. I think that this would help get them started to think critically about things since they are about to enter 5th and potentially 6th grade where the subjects become a little tougher. I am definitely looking forward to John Lachs coming to speak! Great post!

  2. I think it's a good idea to ask kids philosophical questions at an early age, yes they should be focus on having fun and being a kid, but it's never too early to ask humans to start thinking critically. Like you said though, kids ask questions anyway so in their own right they are little philosophers.
