14-4 Fasion, Makeup, Tattoos, Piercings, Cockroach covered dresses... ART

What do you think art is? Would you consider any of the things listed above forms of art? Each person in my group connected to one or more of these.
Who decides what art is? WE DO! Can you imagine being an expert at something just because you say you are? And who makes anyone else an expert over you on what is "beautiful" or "artistic"? The author wants us to understand that art is more of a social construct than anything else. There is no universal standard of art or what someone considers art. It is what we make it, and as long as there is meaning behind what you are portraying as art, then it should be accepted as so. Yes? No?

Do you think a urinal is art? What IS art to you? Comment below and lemme know! Any FQ or DQs friends?

  1. In response to your first question, I think that fashion, tattoos, and the cockroach covered dress is art. (But why in the world someone would wear something like that is unimaginable! I would absolutely freak if I had to wear something that was made of cockroaches!). Anyway, in my personal opinion, I think that art is something that someone makes, and those objects I picked is something that is made.
I agree we decide what is art and what is not art. Some people agree that almost anything is art, but others like me tend to be a little skeptical about art. However, I do not agree that there should be so-called "experts" that get to decide if some piece of art that someone made is a trillion dollars. That is absurd. They may say, "But it is one of a kind!!" Well, everything that everyone makes is one of a kind! Why can't my drawing on my piece of paper be worth that much?! (Even though in reality my drawings are not very good..... Mostly stick figures...)
All in all, I agree that as long as there is a meaning behind what you are portraying as art, then it should be accepted as so. I never really thought of it that way, but I am glad you did! This also leads to the respectful issue. What people say is art should be respected by others, even though they may not see it as art. Good post!

  2. hahaha My aunt works at MTSU and she created these cast iron dresses covered in cockroaches. They were pretty neat looking, although a little disturbing at the same time.

  3. Great discussion! In my opinion i think art is everything.Art is a way of expressing how someone feels. I sometimes go to the lake and just sit and draw whats on my mind so art is a way showing how someone really feels.

  4. Mekael, you make a great point. In our group, we all agreed that art was a way of the artist showing the world what they had pictured or imagined in their head. The same way that an author or director expresses the way they imagine a story, a painter or sculptor would form their own pieces to fit the picture they imagined. To me, that personal touch it what makes it art.

Art is definitely something that comes from inside of someone's head. Who's to say what is art, when you can't actually see the full picture of what lies within someone's mind? I mean, I'm sure you can be an authority on art techniques or famous artists because those are things that can be studied but to look at someone piece of ART and say "Hmm, I don't know. It could be improved..." This was always my problem when it came to art class--like, who are you to tell me if my ART is RIGHT?! WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?! Haha. My favorite are of art though is body art! because you can carry it around on you, expressing who you are :)

  6. Art is completely suggestive, it's any form of self expression and the definition cant really be regulated past that. If someone chooses to brush their teeth and spit on a canvas and call it art, then that would in fact be art.....minty fresh art at that! Art is a great parallel to philosophy, so many of the questions posed have more than one answer which is made up by the philosopher/artist.
