14-2 Stoic Pragmatism

In our group we discussed the difference between analytic and continental philosophers. As a group we were confused about the wording of John Lachs and how he defined the two different groups. Dr. Oliver cleared things up and told us that the Continentalists are vague and they make up their own terminology so it is difficult to follow along but you can if you fully immerse yourself in the material and treat it as a foreign language-really study and get into the subject. He said that they did not really delve into the material and analyze things like the analysts do. They were more broad where as the analysts were more precise and tried to make sure that their statements were factual and did not contradict previous statements.
We also discussed how philosophy has not really changed in 2000 years and if there was going to be progress.

  1. That is true that philosophy hasn't changed but I don't think it is capable of changing. Philosophy is mainly thinking, observing and asking questions....What more can be done?

  2. I didn't know what Lachs mesnt at all. To me though I think philosophy will remain unsolved because its a matter of one's opinion and beliefs. Therefore no one will be wrong about their thoughts.

I am curious to what Lachs has to say about the future of philosophy. I wish that it would change and become something different because I would like to see that change.

  4. I don't think that philosophy will change either. I think it would be cool if it did but I honestly just don't know where it would go.
