You Act How You Listen (Pt 5 - Final Post)

This one is for the road. Take it as you wish, but I think this last song encapsulates what philosophy is. I will let you figure this one out, and if you wish to, please comment what you think it means.

"Lying in the park on a beautiful day
Sunshine in the grass and the children play
Sirens passing, fire engine red
Someone's house is burning down on a day like this
And evening comes, and we're hanging out
On the front step and a car goes by with the windows rolled down
And that war song is playing, "Why can't we be friends"
Someone is screaming crying in the apartment upstairs

Funny the way it is, if you think about it
Somebody's going hungry, someone else is eating out
Funny the way it is, not right or wrong
Somebody's heart is broken, it becomes your favorite song

The way your mouth feels in your lover's kiss
Like a pretty bird on a breeze, or water to a fish
The bomb blast brings the building crashing to the floor
Hear the laughter while the children play war

Funny the way it is, if you think about it
One kid walks 10 miles to school, another's dropping out
Funny the way it is, not right or wrong
On a soldier's last breath, his baby's being born

Standing on a bridge, watch the water passing underneath
It must have been much harder when there was no bridge, just water
Now the world is small, compared to how it used to be
With mountains and oceans and winters and rivers and stars

Watch the sky, the jet plane so far out of my reach
Is there someone up there looking down on me
Boy chase a bird, so close but every time
He'll never catch her, but he can't stop trying"
 ---Dave Matthews Band
Before I end my midterm series of post, I would just like to clarify one thing. The whole idea behind this is what you put into your body is what you are going to get out. A marathon runner does not fuel herself with a snickers bar. In the same way we should fuel ourselves for our "betterment" (if that is even a word...). Just thinking about philosophy or things that you care about once every blue moon does you no good. It would be like a poet writing a grocery list and hoping it improves their verses. It would be like Hawking studying the glow in the dark stars on my ceiling. It is a daily consciousness of your world that philosophy preaches, not a pondering second.

Anyhow, I would to say that their is a difference between music as an art form and art as a form of entertainment. Bach vs Ke$ha? Both are musical, but one is art the other is entertainment. Which is not to say that their is not any crossover, but the bridge is from art to entertainment and not the other way around.

So! Post if you will what you think of this one last song, "Funny the Way it Is" by the Dave Matthews Band

  1. I think the song's lyrics really captures the vast range and gamut of life, so diametrically opposite in so many ways. Absurd, and we must do more to address violence and hunger and meanness and pain... but also plural and diverse in wonderful ways. I'll have to listen, to see if the song sustains that positive feeling along with the sadness.

Art vs. entertainment? Guess we need both, but we also need to be able to tell the difference.

  2. I hate that I can't edit my comments: "capture"...

    Anyway, nice discussion Michele.
