Inception and Philosophy

Megan Covington

section 13 Final Exam

Part 1

“In our life, we have dreams. When we’re dreaming, we usually don’t realize that it’s a dream. Therefore, all our life may be a dream without our knowing.” This is a quote from the book, Inception and Philosophy by Thorsten Botz-Bornstein. Inception is a very complicated thing to explain and talk about. Inception deals with our dreams and how to understand them. It deals with things like how we know if we are dreaming, dreams inside of dreams, projections, totems, and limbo. All of these things are a part of what inception is all about.

The reason for doing this is to get into someone else's thoughts to discover certain information that the inceptioner might need to obtain.  Another reason for going through with inception is to plant a seed into someone else's mind, to make them believe a certain thing. For example, in the movie, Leonardo DiCaprio plays Dominick Cobb, who is hired to go into the subconscious of a wealthy businessman's sons mind to convince him to dissentegrate his fathers company after he dies. If he succeeds with this task, he is promised to be able to return to his children back in the United States after being convicted of a murder charge that he did not commit. So hearing this, Cobb recruits a team and comes up with a plan on how to do so. There has to be a certain amount of people to accomplish the task, and each person has a certain job to do. One of the jobs for a specific person is to design the layout of the dream. They have to imagine a place, while they are in the dream, so that the person they are trying to fool does not know that they are dreaming. Another persons job is to stay awake and put everybody under and make sure that everything runs smoothly. And then other team member is an identity forger. He pictures himself becoming someone else in a dream, and then actually becomes that person to trick the person that they are trying to fool.

This was not just an ordinary inception that they had to do. What they had to do to make the person they are trying to fool believe, was to go inside of a dream, inside of a dream, inside of a dream. A total of three levels. In the first dream, they kidnap the victim and hold him at gunpoint to make him believe that it is real life. They try and get a number to his dads safe out of him, but he doesn't seem to know it. The identity forger turns into the dads assistant to try and talk the victim into giving the number. When they go into the next dream, they tell him that he is dreaming to confuse him and play with his mind to get him on their team. It's a very confusing game, and you really have to pay attention.
