He was actually an intuitionist, and believed that with enough thought we could find the morally correct decision, which contrasted completely with Kant's view as well as Hegel's view. I actually find this rather hilarious because Butler seemed to have created a microcosm into which we could insert the entirety of philosophy. Although I don't agree with his view, it is very interesting to contemplate!
