Sec 19 Group 4 Cupitt on Non Realism of God

Sorry for the late post, I got a little behind.

Cupitt's philosophy is all based on the idea of non realism, which he defines as, "[a] view that things don’t exist apart from our knowledge of them and the ways in which we describe them: everything takes shape and gets fixed in our conversation."He takes this perspective and applies to religious practices and the belief, or lack of, in a God. He uses the theory of the idea of human conception based on Genesis to defend his case for non realism. Although he makes all these monumental claims about the non existence of claims, during the interview it is revealed that he is a practicing priest. This is something the group found particularly ironic. Don Cupitt offers a fair argument to defend his point of view, and although most of our group members didn't agree with his perspective, could easily respect a theory that was well developed and well versed.

Factual Question:
What is the main principle Cupitt uses to defend his viewpoint on the existence of God?
-Non-realism

Discussion Question:
Cupitt makes the opinionated observation that there has been a decline in Christianity, why does he make this statement? What other religions or religious beliefs does he suggest have grown more popular?

  2. This was definitely an interesting subject because we found out that Cuppit is actually a priest yet he is skeptical of the idea of God and his existence. We were created by God, and were made to know God. If God does exist, don't you think he would want you to have a relationship with him? Doesn't it make sense that he is the answer for a lot of questions in life that people struggle with?
God does exist and has a specific plan for each person. But instead we each turn our own ways and turn our backs towards our creator and run towards anything that satisfies our desires. There's evidence for this not just in the bible but in our history and human nature. But enough about my views and the truth according to the Bible.

    Factual Question:
True or False, Cuppit is a controversial theologian and philosopher whose BBC television series The Sea of Faith spawned a theological movement with the same name.
    True

Discussion Question: does Don Cuppit's philosophy on religion relate to your views on God?
