Hakuna Matata sec19 group3 Lachs 1-27

I think we all though Lachs style of wriiting was kind of hard to understand, but we also found his views on different topics very intriguing. We strated talking about ethics and how Lachs described High academic achievement and writting that arent really associated with normal people in society. He was basically saying that philosopher scholars need to make their writting more accessible to society. We then started talked about how he said Philosophers are constrained within universities. Universities used to be a public resource and professors shared prospectives with everyone. Now we have walled off professors and they are somewhat not accessible to average readers. Lachs explains how the reward should be for people who are intellectual for the community not just scholars exactly like themselves. We then discussed the question that Lachs presented about whether or not the US would be better off with a council of ethics staffed by philosophers? We all agreed that this would be helpful and it would allow the government to take a new view on what would be better for the people. This was associated with choosing the best hapiness.

I am in Section 13 group 3 but, as for the question regarding a council of ethics stacked with philosophers, my only question would be, Who appoints this council? Because if we use it to monitor the government officials, we then run into the problem of the officials stacking the council with like minded philosophers, and if this council has more power than congress, we run into the issue of having created an oligarchy instead of a representative democracy. If this is what Lach wants then i would assume he is a lot like Plato in the since that he wants philosopher kings.

From last discussion, I found it interesting that Lach asserts that "uncovering the truth is not what philosophy is best at doing".
F: In terms of technology design, would a stoic produce technology to change the world or to change oneself?
D: According to Lach, stoics don't see the point in trying to control the external world because it is futile. Is it sound to believe we shouldn't try to control the external world?
