Hakuna Matata sec 19 Popper and Kuhn

We reviewed what each philosophers view were on science. Popper came up with the scientific method and believed you should find evidence that can prove your hypothesis as falsifiable. Kuhn said there was a framework and a pattern in science. He created the paradigm shift which is when certain ideas  are popular for awhile and get copied. Until a new idea comes along and that idea is more popular. This new idea doesnt necessarily mean that it is more true.

  1. How exactly does Popper use science to prove a hypothesis?

How does Popper determine whether something is popular or not considering popularity can be determined in many different ways?

  2. Our discussion helped me distinguish the difference between Kuhn and Popper.

    Questions on Rawls:
Factual-His better society idea was based on what?
    Answer: Freedom and equality
Discussion-how would he formulate the "veil of ignorance" principle in his new society?

  3. I'll have to agree with Kuhn's philosophy on science - the idea that there are patterns within a framework of science, itself.

F: What is the phenomenon called when an idea plants itself and then becomes copied many times over?

D: If there are patterns in science, what does this mean for Creationists? For Darwanists?

O: What is the difference between induction and deduction and which is the more effective one to use?

I was not present for our last discussion but found both Popper and Kuhn's beliefs behind scientific method quite interesting, and found a little bit of truth in both ideas.

Factual: Rawls believed rich deserved bonuses if what happened simultaneously?
Answer: The poor got a chunk of money as well

Discussion: It seems Rawls creates a society in which the lower class would seemingly dwindle to obsurity. Do you think this society is possible to achieve?

We had a good discussion on Popper & Kuhn. It was interesting to learn about the background of the scientific method and how Popper came up with it.

Factual: What are the two principles of the Theory of Justice?
    - Liberty Principle & Difference Principle
Discussion: Do you think Rawls's ideal society would be better or worse than ours?

I definitely agree with Kuhn's idea that we can only know what the current paradigm allows us to know. It's similar to the concept of rose-colored lenses in my opinion.

F: Rawl's Liberty Principle stated that basic liberties should be protected at all costs even if restricting some of them would improve the lives of the majority of the people. T or F?

D: Should people who are gifted(athletically, intellectually, etc.) be rewarded more in society?

    Questions on Rawls:

Factual: True or False? Rawls' Difference Principle is all about equality?
    A: True.
Discussion: Would you support Rawls' Difference Principle applied to our society?

    Rawls:
factual: T or F, Rawls believes those who have special talents or are very knowledgeable should be rewarded. answer: False
discussion: would you take a gamble and create a society where you could either end up very rich or very poor? or create a society where everyone is equal no matter what? why?
