7 and 1/2 Americans (Gr.2 Section 19)

Our philosopher for tomorrow's discussion is Searle who i actually understand quite easily. His philosophy is based around if computers can think for themselves. He basically says that computers simply take information and pass it along so they can't think just take and do whatever is imputted. This in my mind makes a great deal of sense.

Factual Question: Does Searle believe that computers can think? No

Discussion Question: Why do we think computers can think? I personally think we think this in some cases because the programs that are being developed have been in development for many years and we don't really think about how sensitive our technology has become in terms of adaptability.

  3. I agree that computers cannot think. They are machines, and while they can process inputted information, they can't make decisions.
F: Did Searle believe that computers would one day be able to think? Yes

D: Will computers become advanced enough in the future to where they can actually think for themselves?

Btw, I won't be able to make it to class today, I'm going to be stuck in Nashville.
