In today's class (9-19-12) we discussed how predjudice and predetermined factors by yourself can affect a person's credibility when you are communicating with them. Fricker made many good points about this. She used examples such as women in the workplace. Many times in today's business world, women's ideas are automatically dissmissed just based on the fact that they are women. Gender is not the only thing that people look down upon in todays world. Race, ethnicity, political stance, and many other things are all things that affect the way people listen to ideas and communicate.
I found it interesting that this chapter came right after the disscussion on Cosmopolitanism. I see many ways in which this could tie into that subject as well. Cosmopolitanism is knowing that we are all human and have certain things in common. We should stick together and treat everyone the same. If the world had more people that followed this, predjudice and predetermined things that make us different would not affect the credibility of a person you are talking to. The last two disscussions opened my eyes and made me realize that the world would be a much better place if both of these things were carried out by everyone. It may even start a movement of many more things in this world getting done and getting done correctly. many people have good ideas, and if we take away their background and just listen, we may find that we will learn much more by communicating with people.

Everybody get your questions posted! i can only find group 3 and group 4 so far! I will post my comments for Monday's discussion when i have a little bit more time! Hope to see everyone Monday!

I wanted to go ahead and post a little something about Monday's class while it is fresh on my mind. When Ali posts about the next class i will copy this post underneith that one. Our reading for the next class is about Anne Phillips view on Multiculturalism. This subject in my opinion will be much more up for debate than the last couple topics. i feel that in many situations, Multiculturalism should be practiced. On the other hand, if feel as if in some situations it is a bad practice. The example that Phillips talked about that brought it to the forefront to me was the example talking about the teacher that wanted to cover her face when other male teachers were present. This is not something that should be practiced in a school with children around. In America, i personally feel that we should not be teaching children at a young age to oppress women. This is just one example of a cultural practice that certain people should not see. im not saying not to respect these cultures, but if everyone is expected to respect every other culture, I believe it is only respectful to take out of view the controversial parts of your culture. it will be interesting to see where this topic takes us on Monday! hope everyone gets a chance to read this chapter or listen to the podcast. it will really get you thinking.
The question i will pose for next class is as follows:
If a part of a culture is considered morally wrong to you, should you still respect it? Also, does this make it more difficult to have Cosmopolitan views?
