Autodidactic Section 14 Group 1

Hello everyone,
Today, we members of Group 1 had the oppurtunity to philosophize outdoors. We found an enormous tree not to far from the steps of the JUB to gather underneath, as we discussed the assigned reading on Machiavelli. What most of us concluded was that he was a cruel, merciless individual. In addition, most of us thought that he went about achieving "success" in the worst way possible. We also compared him to others from history, like Adolf Hitler. Machiavelli's harsh teachings influenced many dictators negatively. Machiaelli was definitely the most controversial philosopher that we have discussed since the beginning of the semester. Everyone had comments on this particular assigned reading. In closing, Group 1 is looking forward to the next philosophical discussion.

    Hello all,

The assigned reading on Pascal was very religious, not unlike a few of the other philosphers we have been discussing thus far. Pascal's entire focus was on that of God and chances. He actually expected individuals to put forth their best bets at whether or not they thought God existed. He treated religion and life like a math problem. Outcomes could only be this or that. There were no gray areas with Pascal. But anywho, the assigned reading took a different approach to religion, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on everything we've read ,at our next meeting.

    Questions:

    1. What did Pascal prefer to be catergorized as?

    2. Do you agree with Pascal's theory?

    Hi Everyone!

Sorry my posts keep being so late. I promise they will be sooner from now on!
Every new chapter I have new favorite philosopher. Pascal was slightly frustrating, he was almost too true to mathematics. He kept everything organized and had such specific values and philosophies. I find his dedication to religion honorable but did he take it slightly too far? Can't wait to hear what you guys think! I really loved reading about Pascal, his math knowledge blended with his religion created quite an interesting man.
    See you guys soon!

Factual: What was Pascal's invention that changed mathematics?

Discussion: How much power do you think we have over controlling what we personally believe?

    Hi,

After reading about Pascal it show that his philosophy about religion had some major flaws. I still question if he believed in God for all the right reasons, or just for the benefit of himself. Doesn't that make him unchristian like? Putting yourself first, I mean. I am not really sure about his philosophy. It seems like he could have went deeper - maybe if he didn't die - and explained more of which God to believe in.

Factual: What did Pascal not take into consideration when said 'believe in God'?
Discussion: Do you believe his father influenced him to look at everything as a probability?
