Philosophy 01 Asiyah, Allie, Hannah, Katie

What is Robert Ingersoll also known as?

A. The Pagan Prophet
B. The great philosopher of the 19th century
C. The new Jesus
D. The new Buddha
Answer: A

There wasn't much in the text about Ingersoll, but he called himself an agnostic. He viewed any higher power and/or afterlife as the unknown, and thought that it was a waste of time focusing on the possibilities. I thought it was funny that when his friend Mortimer Bennet was arrested for mailing birth control information Ingersoll defended him by saying that he bible is full of sexually explicit material, and that it too should be barred for the mail system.

Q2 What do you think about the fairness of his Bennet's arrest? Compare his arrest to issues today, do you think that religious bias is an accurate defense for the same crime?
Remember that in this time period the acceptance of this type of "explicit" material was far more extreme then now and days.  Birth control is not an issue anymore, and we are progressing as a nation to accept most views. However there are still issues like polygamy that are not socially accepted. There are cases in the Bible that show a man taking on two wives and this is ok and accepted by christians, but the idea of having more then one spouse is still looked down upon.

  1. Using the christian religion as the government's law basis would make it impossible to run a country, state, or even city. It's not fair to say freedom of religion if only one religion makes the law of the land.
