Mendellsohn's Daughters (16) (2)

'Doubt' doesn't give us much on Mendelssohn's Daughters unless we read the complete section. The importance of being able to fit into the community and maintain the self can be a real struggle. It was worse then. Fortunately we have to hide less these days. The balance of being the true self and fitting in manifested itself in the Dorothea's (Brendel's) and Recha's religious conversions. So, what was their contribution to philosophy? They were an example of what led to reform in the Jewish faith. Jews were converting to assimilate and the daughters were part of that. Leaders of the faith saw membership thin and did something about it. Felix was a hell of a composer. That is where the legacy of the Mendellsohn's seems to have its real strength. Maybe I missed something.
