Group 1(17)

Our discussion circled around atomism and the implications this new theory had on philosophy and the world. During out discussion we talked about the relationship between science, philosophy, and religion. While they all conflict each other at times, they also seem to fit together. We came up with two questions.
Factual: Which ancient is usually given credit for atomism by moderns?
a. Spinoza
b. Socrates
c. Montaigne
d. Democritus
Discussion: Does science lead to certainty or evermore doubt?
And For Next Time-
Factual:True or False-Michel Foucalt says "the pastoral state" took the place of public religion.
Discussion:Do you believe their should be a seperation between religion and government?

  1. Dr. Oliver talked about how science swoops in and takes the philosophical questions and incorporates them into "real" theory. I wonder what other subjects work in the same way. Has history not been directed by English and Economics by Math? I guess when you really get down to the rudiments of things every subject has gotten to some question that needs explaining and turned to another subject. Really Philosophy is the only subject that could stand on its own because it is truly about questioning the world around us. Of course knowledge of other subjects helps lead us to answers but philosophy does not have to answer the questions it poses. Simply the search seems to constitute philosophy.

    Factual
    TRUE or FALSE
One of Stalin's main targets when he rose to power was the Russian Orthodox Church?
    TRUE
Do you think a more interconnected society is beneficial or do you see more positive towards secular societies

  2. Within our discussion group we talked about science and philosophy. My opinion on the matter was that to make a concise response to the topic, one would have to analyze their own beliefs. For example, a certain amount of science might be enough for one person to make their assumption but may differ for someone else.

    Next week's Factual Question:
True or False - The secular state became a widespread ideal as governments from various traditions decided to get religion out of the state and to encourage public secularism.

    Next week's Discussion Question:
    - Because the idea that states were going to have to be secular, and that the secular states was going to have to be emotionally charged, do you think this was ethical in this century based on your reasons today?
