Garrison B. 3-17 Evolution and Einstein

Factual Question: True/False The Scopes "Monkey Trial" was the court case involving John Scopes and the Tennessee Government stemming from Scopes's teaching of evolution in the classroom.

Answer: True

Discussion Question: Einstein said in his 1932 speech "My Credo" that " the most beautiful and deepest experience a man can have is the sense of the mysterious...He who never had this experience seems to me, if not dead, then at least blind. To sense that behind everything that can be experienced there is something that our mind cannot grasp and whose beauty and sublimity reaches us only indirectly and as a feeble reflection, this is religiousness. In this sense I am religious." What do you think of this?

  1. Factual: T/F
-H.L. Mencken, skeptic, critic, and journalist, coined the phrase "Bible Belt."

    A: True

    Discussion:
Clarence Darrow believed that we are all agnostics. He believed that we all have doubts for religions that are not our own. With this view, can you accept that you are an agnostic?

  2. True or false a law in Tennessee was passed in 1925, stating that in High schools were not allowed to teach anything that denies the "story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible."

Einstein states "I believes in Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exsists, not in a god who concerns himself with fates and actions of huma beings" why do you think this is a wise or unwise answer to his quesioned faith? does this give you a differnt outlook on your own beliefs?
