In class we introduced ourselves, and discussed our views on who influences us in our lives. We also talked about what we thought philosophy was.

Our question is:
What influenced us to be where we are today? (in life, college, work, MTSU etc...)

  1. My influence for being in college is to have a safety net to fall back on in the future if I have to. In today's world, a college education is becoming mandatory in order to have a good career, and with the economy and job market the way it is, you're lucky if you even have a job. Therefore I believe that getting a college education will make me more employable in the future and will allow me to have a high standard of living working in a career that I enjoy.

  2. I am here today because of many different reasons. I am in college because my parents never gave up on me, and also taught me to push myself and do what I feel is right. I am at MTSU because I felt like I shouldn't leave Murfreesboro just yet. With my family supporting me and a loving fiance here, I couldn't find a better reason to stay. Now that I am part of a great Brotherhood, Phi Sigma Pi, it gives me even more reason to want to stay at MTSU. Everyday brings new challenges and adventures, and all of which, will influence me someway or another.

  3. There has never been a doubt in my mind whether or not I should go to college. In the present times, a college education is essential in starting a career and leading a prosperous life. I chose MTSU because it left me room for flexibility in my education. The biggest influence on my life has to be my parents, who raised me well and taught me self-motivation and perserverence in difficult times.

  4. I am at MTSU because it was time to start the rest of my life. I was in the ARMY for 8 years prior to my college venture and I realized that I didn't want to do that anymore. This is an opportunity for me to do what I want in life instead of listening to everyone tell me what to enjoy.

  5. To add to our fate vs logos topic, according to Encyclopedia Britannica

    logos
(Greek: “word,” “reason,” “plan”) In Greek philosophy and theology, the divine reason that orders the cosmos and gives it form and meaning. The concept is found in the writings of Heracleitus (6th century BC) and in Persian, Indian, and Egyptian philosophical and theological systems as well. It is particularly significant in Christian theology, where it is used to describe the role of Jesus as the principle of God active in the creation and ordering of the cosmos and in the revelation of the divine plan of salvation. This is most clearly stated in the Gospel of John the Apostle, which identifies Christ as the Word (Logos) made flesh.

What I gather from this is that "logos" is the divine path that has been set out for us, as opposed to "fate" which describes the ultimate reason we exist. My opinion.
